Understanding poultry light biology and environment
When there are 14 to 16 hours of daylight each day, chickens produce their eggs at their highest levels. The number of daylight hours decreases throughout the winter, sometimes reaching only eight. You should only provide as much light to your chicken coop as is necessary to bring them back to that 14–16 hour window if you opt to add lights.
However, you shouldn't go above that window since chickens might get stressed out by too much light. Stress reduces egg production, so you'll soon find yourself back where you were.
The need for electrical service in the coop is the first drawback of lighting the coop. In the first year, we just connected the coop with a sturdy exterior extension cable, but by the second year, we had installed electricity.
Actually, I like the coop more with the electric option. If you depended on an extension cord in the winter, you would clearly put it away and have to use flashlights in the summer. However, there are occasions in the summer when you may require illumination after dark. Just to make things simpler, the coop has a light switch.
Solar lights are popular for use in chicken coops. In chicken coops, I've seen some very adorable ornamental solar lights in use. The fact that the panel is often on a wire a few feet long makes the Christmas-style string lights particularly well-liked. If you can position the panel in a window, it should get enough light to function.
