You may already be aware that chickens need UV light in order to produce eggs; although this is usually not an issue in the summer, the shorter days of the off-season might make things more challenging. Every hen needs an additional light source to lay eggs as efficiently as possible. By convincing the chickens that it is still light outside thanks to the UV rays it generates, they may keep on producing eggs. In addition, it may make it quite simple to watch over your hens at night to protect them from predators. This lamp includes a hook for hanging or a magnet to attach it to your chicken coop or run and has a thin design (less than 2" thick!). This wonderful light has a 24' power chord and an extra power socket so you may use it with another power source.

Understanding poultry light biology and environment

The light intensity should be approximately 50 lumens (good enough to read a book). Make sure feeders and drinkers are well lit, underneath the light and that there aren’t too many shadows. Nest boxes should not be well lit.

Low energy light bulbs can hang from the roof of the coop, but my own preference is to use an LED lighting strip which gives monochromatic light from different wavelengths. Having a strip light with multiple light sources helps to reduce shadows and LED has several advantages over conventional lighting, including high energy efficiency, long life, high reliability and low maintenance costs.
