Bactericidal mechanism

The 254nm ultraviolet rays are strongly absorbed by the purine and pyrimidine bases in the microbial DNA/RNA, causing adjacent thymine bases to form dimers, thereby destroying the double helix structure of DNA and blocking its replication function.

254nm is the peak wavelength at which DNA absorbs light (253.7nm). At this wavelength, the energy of ultraviolet photons is efficiently absorbed by the covalent bonds in nucleic acids, resulting in the maximum sterilization effect.Microorganisms are unable to carry out normal cell division and metabolic activities due to DNA damage, eventually leading to death.
