Presenting the first adaptive LED-illuminated LCoS light engine in the world.
Compared to traditional LCoS, SpotlightTM display technology offers up to 90% lighting power savings and 10x local contrast.

January 30, 2024, SAN MATEO, CA - The first adaptable LED lighting architecture for LCoS in the world, SpotlightTM display technology, is announced by Avegant. Avegant has made it possible to take use of the advantages of APL (average pixel level) by dynamically lighting areas of an LCoS microdisplay. This has improved contrast by more than 10 times and allowed for illumination power reductions of up to 90%. Incorporating SpotlightTM display technology with Avegant's current devices preserves the benefits of tiny, well-established light engines that provide effective, full-color, high-resolution, polarized output.

Avegant is working on cutting-edge augmented reality technology alongside Lumileds and Applied Materials, Inc.

"With great pleasure, we present our new SpotlightTM display technology, which builds on the success of the AG-30L2. The efficiency benefits of APL and higher contrast will be made possible by this, which will raise the bar for LCoS light engines while preserving the small size, full color, high resolution displays that we have grown accustomed to from LCoS, according to Ed Tang, CEO and founder of Avegant. "We are thrilled to be collaborating with incredible partners to enable a new level of ecosystem system performance."

In order to benefit from APL, customers have been waiting for microLED displays to develop. ALM's power-saving features, such as permanent content, are made possible by SpotlightTM display technology, a low-cost, scalable LCoS-based solution that is now on the market and offers effective full-screen content.

At SPIE Photonics West 2024, SpotlightTM display technology demonstrations are available upon request.

Brendan Moran, Senior Director of Display Technology Development at Lumileds, said, "We are happy, but not surprised, that our innovative LED architecture supports the previously unattainable Augmented Reality power savings of SpotlightTM display technology."

Ludovic Godet, Managing Director and Head of R&D and Engineering for Applied Materials' Photonics Platforms Business in the Office of the CTO, said that SpotlightTM represents a significant advancement in display technology for lightweight AI smart glasses. "Complete system-level co-optimization yields the greatest outcomes when creating a display system. We are thrilled to collaborate closely with Avegant to create better augmented reality experiences for consumers by fusing these developments with our scalable and market-leading waveguide technologies.

Concerning Avegant

A well-funded, venture-backed tech startup called Avegant is creating next-generation display technology to make augmented reality experiences conceivable that were previously unthinkable. In order to create displays that provide customers genuine augmented reality experiences, the business draws on its extensive scientific knowledge of human vision and head-mounted display technologies as well as its production expertise in consumer electronics. Avegant has created a number of technologies since its founding, including the first consumer wearable high-quality head-mounted display ("Glyph"), lightfield and foveated displays, and, more recently, the AG-30L2, the smallest LCoS light engine now in production.
