Edge Lit vs. Back Lit: The Differences LED Lighting on Flat Panels

There are many reasons why good lighting is important: it lets you see the surroundings and details around you, offers the proper mood, and may improve the look of a room. Often dull and unattractive, conventional fluorescent panel lighting calls for panel removal to replace bulbs and clear off dust and insects (yuck!). Using half the power of conventional fluorescent lights, flat panel LED lighting produces a lovely, skylight look for up to 50,000 hours. Clearly, LED lighting is the better choice given less upkeep, less cost, and improved look.
For certain settings, flat panel LED lighting may be the ideal source of light. Flat panel LED lighting is fantastic for hospitals, schools, workplaces, and warehouses among others. Choosing flat panel LED lighting, though, is only the first step. Available in back lighted and edge lit versions, flat panel LED lights each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

How do back lit and edge lit flat panel illumination differ?

Edge Lit

Usually with a protective aluminium cover, the edge lighted panel's perimeter is where its illumination source is situated. The light generated on the periphery is subsequently spread towards the centre, therefore creating a totally uniform, shadow-less light distribution. For industrial warehouses with shelving, for instance, this kind of lighting is excellent: because the light is evenly-dispersed, there are less to no shadows to block sight between shelves.
These panels can be made thinner than before since the LED light sources are along the borders. The thin panels can be placed, recessed, or suspended among other installation techniques. Depending on the area in use, this variation creates a refined look.

Back Lit

Back illuminated panels have their light source right there-at the rear of the panel. Across the panel, light is diffused away from the source and equally spread into the area. Inevitably thicker to provide a consistent dispersion of light, back illuminated panels restrict mounting possibilities.
Though back lit panels might not have the thin and polished look of an edge lit panel, their financial advantages should be noted. They are cheaper than edge illuminated panels, which means less money spent in the first investment and more money for later initiatives! A back illuminated panel also needs less LED bulbs since the light source is concentrated in one place rather than around the whole panel. Fewer lights means less electricity consumed, more efficiency, and more long-term savings of money. Who, after all, does not like financial savings?
Ultimately, edge lit and back lit panels are excellent light sources with just a couple of main distinctions. Both offer a significant improvement over conventional fluorescent lighting and brilliant, natural-looking light. To find the ideal light source for your area, one must take into account all aspects of these light sources-including beauty, usefulness, efficiency, and cost.
Edge lighted panels are a great option if you want a more visually appealing, shadow-less light and are not against paying a higher power bill and investment cost. Back illuminated panels are a wonderful choice for a more cheap yet efficient and useful source of illumination. In the end, it's up to you and what resonates with your particular area!
