When electricity is off, emergency lights guide evacuations silently while protecting buildings. However, many people forget that emergency lights depend on their batteries. A bad battery can disable the emergency light in critical situations. Battery status identification is a must-take safety training.

Test power-off: Check emergency performance

Normal indicator light functionality does not guarantee emergency function. Manual power outage tests are most reliable. Find the emergency light circuit breaker or turn off the wall lighting switch to cut power to the lamp. At this point, an emergency light should automatically turn on and illuminate for the given time, usually 90 minutes. If the lamp tube doesn't light up after the power interruption or only briefly lights up for a few minutes before fading out, the battery is old or damaged and can't meet emergency needs.

Watch for daily anomalies: Performance decrease indicators

Some modest abnormalities require care even in non-testing conditions. If the emergency light is significantly dimmer than usual under normal power supply, the lamp housing shows abnormal temperature rise, or the battery area has bulges or leakage marks, the battery is failing. If the emergency light housing bulges owing to the internal battery, you should cease using it and replace it immediately to avoid battery failure and safety hazards.

In conclusion, expert checks alone cannot guarantee emergency light battery performance. Perform regular power-off tests and record any abnormalities throughout everyday use. Every user may protect safety first. Remember that emergency illumination only becomes useful during a power loss, thus the battery must always be ready.
