EXPLOSION PROOF LIGHTS: UNDERSTANDING CLASS AND DIVISION
When it comes to subterranean utility infrastructure, safety is a top priority, and lighting is no exception. For hazardous environments, such as spaces with flammable vapours, liquids, or gases, or spaces with combustible dust or fibres, OSHA mandates certified explosion resistant lights. These kinds of situations are used to classify the Class and Division that an explosion resistant light is approved for.
Explaining Class and Division
Explosion-proof lights are divided into three different classifications, which are Class I, Class II, and Class III. Explosion proof lights can be distinguished from one another in these largest senses. The classes are then further divided into two distinct sections.
The three divisions and classes are as follows:
Class I, Division 1 - Where constantly or often present within the environment under normal operating circumstances are ignitable quantities of flammable gases, vapours, or liquids.
Class I, Division 2 - When the environment contains ignitable quantities of combustible gases, vapours, or liquids under unusual working circumstances.
Where ignitable amounts of flammable dusts are present in the environment under typical operating circumstances is Class II, Division 1.
Where flammable dust concentrations are present in the environment under unusual operating circumstances, this is classified as Class II, Division 2.
Easily ignitable fibres or substances that produce combustible flyings are present in the environment under normal operating conditions are classified as Class III, Division 1.
When easily ignitable fibres or substances that produce flammable flyings are present in the environment under unusual operating circumstances, it is classified as Class III, Division 2.
