During your search for an LED strip light, you may frequently encounter a voltage rating. Are you uncertain about its precise meaning? Are you aware of whether to select 12V or 24V? Continue reading to discover!
Which is superior - 12V or 24V?
A prevalent option when selecting an LED strip is either 12V or 24V. Both pertain to low voltage lighting, with 12V being the predominant specification. Which option is superior?
The outcome is contingent upon several aspects; however, the following questions should assist in refining your focus.
Do you own a current power supply specification?
If you are utilizing 12V batteries or possess a stock of 12V power supplies, it would be prudent to ensure that the new LED strips are compatible with your existing equipment.
Consequently, you will not require the purchase of a new set of power supply solely to accommodate the LEDs.
Is it necessary to trim the LED strips to a specific length?
12V LED strips consist of 3 LEDs each string, while 24V LED strips comprise 6 LEDs per strand. Although they can be trimmed to length between strings, they cannot be severed within a string.
Consequently, 12V LED strips can be severed every 3 LEDs, and 24V LED strips can be severed every 6 LEDs.
Depending on the LED density, severing every 6 LEDs on a 24V strip may result in length options increasing in increments of 3 inches rather than 1.5 inches at 12V.
Do you still lack a preference? Under same conditions, a 24V system will exhibit superior performance.
The identical product available in 12V and 24V configurations will often possess the same quantity of LEDs, power, and luminous output, differing only in voltage and amperage combinations.
A 24W per meter LED strip at 12V consumes 2.0A per meter, whereas the 24V variant consumes 1.0A per meter. Both variants will consume 24W and yield equivalent light output; however, the 24V type draws lower amperage, resulting in superior internal performance within the LED strip and at the power supply.

Resistance is only determined by amperage and is independent of voltage. Consequently, all other factors being constant, the lower amperage alternative (24V) will exhibit superior electrical performance.
This rationale applies to the operation of power grids, which utilize several thousand kilovolts for energy transmission and subsequently reduce the voltage for distribution to residential areas.

Consequently, if the selection of power supply and the cuttable length are not critical factors, we assert that 24V is preferable than 12V.
