How to Install Recessed Lighting Above a Shower

Traditional bathroom lighting typically consists of a fixture over the washbasin for a focused light source for shaving or doing makeup, along with a ceiling fixture as the room's main source of illumination. The issue with this lighting scheme is that much of the light is blocked by the shower curtain when it is closed. You'll value the additional light provided by placing a recessed light above your shower each time you take a shower or clean your tub.
Getting Ready for Installation
1. Before beginning the project, turn off the circuit breaker for the circuit you'll be using to power your recessed light fixture. Then, test the circuit with a noncontact voltage tester to be sure you have the right breaker off.
2. To locate the centre of the bathtub or shower stall on the ceiling, measure its length and width. If there are no ceiling joists in the way, check with a stud finder to make sure the area is clear, then mark it with a pencil.
3. Take off the shower curtain and any other items that are kept in the tub, such as shampoo bottles, soap, razors, and other items. If your bathtub has a drain stopper, insert it there to block the drain.
4. Spread out an open drop cloth made of plastic or canvas to completely encircle your shower or bathtub. Together, these two measures will help prevent plasterboard dust from entering the drain, where it can clog it.
5. Position the cardboard template for the recessed light fixture above the pencil mark, and then trace the template onto the ceiling. Use the plasterboard saw to remove the circle.
6. Choose the location for the wall switch for the shower light fixture and make sure there are no studs in the way by using a stud finder. Cut the hole for the switch box using the plasterboard saw.
7. Connect a section of NM cable to the switch box hole you cut out from the junction box where you are obtaining power for the switch. To designate the cable's end as the line-side of the circuit, wrap a strip of electrical tape around it. From the switch's placement to the hole above the shower, run a further length of cable. 8 to 12 inches of cable should protrude from the holes' edges.
The Recessed Light Fixture Installation
1. Climb into the attic or crawlspace above the shower, insert the recessed fixture into the hole, and adjust it so that the bottom lip of the fixture is level with the ceiling's plasterboard. Use nails or wood screws to fasten the fixture's bracket arms to the joists in the ceiling. Verify whether the fixture is IC-rated or not. You must make sure that there is at least 3 inches of clear space between the body of the fixture and any insulation if it is not IC certified.
2. Discard one of the knockout holes on the junction box by removing the lid from the junction box on the fixture. A NM cable connector should be mounted on the knockout, and the NM cable should be pushed into the junction box through the connector. To keep the cable in place, tighten the two screws on the connector.
3. Cut the wires to a manageable length and remove the outer coating from the cable within the junction box. Take out about 3/4 inch of insulation from the wire ends.
4. Twist the two white wires together, then secure the pair with a wire connection. The two black wires should be twisted together, and you should also screw a wire connection over them. If the fixture has a ground wire, connect it to the circuit's ground wire by twisting the two together, then screwing a wire connector over them. If not, wrap the ground wire around the green ground screw inside the junction box, then tighten the screw down. of a................... The junction box cover should be changed.
5. Once you have around 6 inches of each wire protruding from the old-work wall box, insert the two cables that are protruding from the switch's access hole. Set the switch box into the hole after pushing the cables back into the wall. Ensure that the box is level before tightening the two screws to secure it in place.
6. Strip the wrapping from the cables, keeping in mind which one is the line (power side) and which one is the load (fixture side). All of the wires' ends should have 3/4-inch of insulation removed using the wire strippers.
7. Connect the two white wires by twisting them together and covering them with a wire connection. The white cables should be pushed into the box's back. Before tightening the screw, wrap the black line side wire around the switch's bottom terminal. Tighten the screw after wrapping the black load side wire around the switch's top terminal.
8. Twist the ends of an additional 6-inch piece of extra ground wire and the two ground wires together. Wrap the other end of the extra wire around the green ground screw on the switch after screwing a wire connector over the twisted connection. Once the switch is flush with the box, tighten the ground screw and re-insert all of the wires.
9. Install the cover plate after securing the switch to the box with the top and bottom screws.
10. After installing the water-resistant light cover, put an appropriately rated light bulb in the recessed fixture above the shower.
11. Remove one of the available knockouts from the junction box where you are receiving electricity for your circuit by opening it. Bring the cable into the box, insert an NM connector into the knockout's hole, and tighten the two screws on the connector to keep it in place.
12. After removing the cable's sheathing earlier, strip the wires of 3/4-inch of insulation. Twist the white switch wire with the other white wires after removing the wire connection from the white wires, and then put it back on. If required, use a larger wire connector.
13. After connecting the ground wire to the connection and replacing the wire connector, disconnect the wire connector from the ground wires. Make sure all of the connections are snug and secure, and repeat the process for the black wires. The junction box's cover needs to be replaced.
14. Reset the circuit breaker, then check the installation of the shower light.
