Inground Pool Light Leak Repair
Conduit, the pipe that connects the lamp's light wire to the junction box, is prone to leaks from inground swimming pool lighting. A conduit for pool lights made of 34" or 1" grey PVC pipe runs beneath the deck.
Water can enter the pipe because the connection between the pipe and the light niche is not sealed. Water in the conduit may occasionally freeze solid, causing the conduit to shatter and start to seep out of the pool. Other times, shifting soils or sliding slabs might cause the conduit to split while the deck is being installed.
The pool light may be leaking.
By operating the pool only on the main drain (closing or plugging the skimmers) and allowing the water level to fall, you can detect a pool light leak. You might have a conduit leak if the water level seems to stabilise at the level of the light, or more accurately, just a few inches below the top of the light. To be sure, you can add a few inches of water, turn off the pump, and insert expansion plugs into the skimmers, returns, main drain pipes, and any other pool plumbing lines.
If an inground gunite pool leaks even after all the lines have been tightly closed and the pump has been turned off, either the pool shell or the pool light is leaking. It's important to rule out any liner leaks or areas where the liner was intentionally cut, including the steps, skimmer, return, drain, and pool light.
BENWEI makes a Pool Light Tester that allows you to seal up against the pool wall and apply leak testing dye to see if it gets sucked out of the conduit for more sophisticated pool light leak detection.
What Level Are You At?
You may have a conduit leak, but there is also another leak someplace else if the water level keeps falling below the light's halfway point. Only the port on the upper back of the light niche, where the conduit attaches, will be affected by a pool light conduit leak.
Leaking Pool Light Niche?
Rarely do pool light niches leak; in the vast majority of cases, when a pool light does leak, water escapes through the light conduit and not through the niche's outer shell or from around the niche. However, vinyl pools have the light niche gasket sealed to the pool wall, increasing the likelihood of a leak around the niche.
Is there water in the pool light?
It doesn't necessarily mean that the pool light is leaking if there is water inside the lens, which you can generally see from on-deck, but it does indicate that the lamp gasket has failed, allowing water to pour inside and surround the bulb. Although it should be fixed because it can be dangerous, this is not where the pool leak is coming from.
A Pool Light Conduit Leak's Fix
There are a few ways to seal off the light conduit from within the pool, where it links to the back of the light niche, so don't worry—we won't be digging up the damaged conduit.
silicone SPRAY silicone rubber up into the conduit and all around where the light cord enters the port when the water level is at mid-light or lower. To improve the bond and seal, clean the areas first. makes a reasonably long-lasting repair, but digging everything out can be a hassle if you ever need to replace the complete lamp.
POOL PUTTY: Combine the epoxy and resin in half, then pack it around the connection port and light cord (after they have been cleaned up). Create a cone-shaped seal of putty around the niche, cord, and port. Refill the pool with water, then leave the light on deck for 24 hours so the putty can dry. Reinstall the light cautiously to prevent damaging the putty.
LIGHT CORD STOPPER: Plug the hole in the light niche with a Light Cord Stopper for the most long-lasting fix to a pool light conduit leak. With a hole running through it to allow the light cable to pass through, it is made in two sizes to accommodate a 3/4" or 1" hole. Simply firmly put it into place to prevent water from entering the conduit. Good for brand-new pools as well, to stop light conduit leaks before they start!
