What constitutes an LED strip light?

LED strip lights represent innovative and adaptable lighting solutions. Numerous types and exceptions exist; nonetheless, they predominantly exhibit the following characteristics:

Comprises several discrete LED emitters affixed to a slender, flexible circuit board.
Function using low-voltage direct current electricity
Available in a diverse array of fixed and changeable hues and luminosity
Shipped in a lengthy roll (usually 16 feet / 5 meters), it can be customised to length and features double-sided adhesive for installation.

Structure of an LED strip

An LED strip light often measures half an inch (10-12 mm) in width and can extend up to 16 feet (5 meters) or more in length. They can be trimmed to precise lengths with a pair of scissors along the cut lines, positioned every 1-2 inches.

Individual LEDs are affixed along the strip, generally at densities of 18-36 LEDs per foot (60-120 per metre). The hue and quality of the individual LEDs dictate the overall hue and quality of the LED strip.

The rear of the LED strip features pre-applied double-sided adhesive. Merely remove the lining and affix the LED strip to nearly any surface. The circuit board's flexible design allows for the installation of LED strips on curved and irregular surfaces.

Assessing LED Strip Luminance

The luminosity of LED strips is quantified using the metric lumens. In contrast to incandescent bulbs, various LED strips exhibit varying efficiencies, rendering wattage ratings less significant in assessing real light production.

The brightness of LED strips is generally quantified in lumens per foot (or metre). An LED strip of superior quality should emit a minimum of 450 lumens per foot (1500 lumens per metre), delivering a light output comparable to that of a conventional T8 fluorescent lamp per foot. (For example, a 4-foot T8 fluorescent equals a 4-foot LED strip, producing 1800 lumens).

The brightness of an LED strip is mostly influenced by three factors:

Illumination output and efficacy per LED emitter
The quantity of LEDs per linear foot
The power consumption of the LED strip per linear foot
An LED strip lamp lacking a brightness standard in lumens is a cause for concern. Exercise caution with inexpensive LED strips that assert high brightness, since they may excessively push the LEDs, leading to premature failure.
