New LED light tubes - why are they afraid of long-term storage?

Many warehouse managers and project material preparers assume unopened LED light tubes may be stored indefinitely. Similar to other electronics, LED light tubes have physical and chemical restrictions. Performance degradation and early failure can result from improper long-term storage.

Electrolytic capacitors pose the biggest internal risk

The lamp tube driver power supply's electrolytic capacitor dries out even when not in use. High temperatures expedite this process. The capacitor's energy storage and filtering ability will deteriorate as the electrolyte declines, causing the lamp tube to stick, flicker, or burn out the driver power supply. Longer storage and higher temperatures increase this risk.

Slow plastic and light source chip aging

UV rays and temperature changes will degrade the lamp tube shell's PC plastic impact resistance and light transmission. The substance may yellow and brittle. The LED chip and phosphor decay slowly, but under non-ideal conditions like high humidity and temperature, their light efficiency and color temperature stability will still be affected, resulting in a lower initial luminous flux than the design standard.

Setting long-term storage conditions

Environmental control is essential for storage. Choose a cool, dry warehouse. The optimal temperature and humidity are 5–25 degrees Celsius and below 65%. In addition, "first in, first out" inventory management is advised. Before batch installation, sample power-on tests should be performed on lamp tubes held for more than three years to assess startup characteristics and light output quality to reduce failure risks.

FAQ

Q: Why are brand-new LED light tubes afraid of long-term storage?

A: LED light tubes are a combination of electronic components and chemical materials. Even when not in use, their internal components will gradually age over time. Improper long-term storage will directly lead to performance degradation or early failure, rather than simply being "used up".

Q: How to store LED light tubes correctly to extend their "shelf life"?

A: The key lies in controlling the environment. A cool and dry warehouse should be chosen. The ideal environmental temperature is recommended to be between 5-25℃, with a relative humidity of less than 65%. Be sure to avoid direct sunlight and stay away from heat sources and damp areas.
