Scientific lighting control affects pig herd health, growth, and reproduction. Special pig farming lamps must meet spectral, intensity, and protection standards.


Breeding sows: Proper illumination boosts reproduction


Sowing backfill: A 150-200 lux light intensity and 16-hour daily light duration can stimulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis, hasten puberty by 10-14 days, and enhance estrus detection.
For weaned sows, apply 16-18 hours of high light stimulation (≥ 200 lux) immediately after weaning to reduce the time between weaning and estrus by 1-3 days and enhance ovulations.
Pregnant sows: Maintain a constant 14-hour light exposure (100-150 lux) to reduce stress-induced embryo loss. The lamps must be installed to fulfill the standard for light intensity above the sow's laying area.

Improvement in behavior: Reduce environmental-induced fighting and tail-biting.
Intestinal development, feeding time, and frequency are increased by feeding stimulation.
Priority is given to 450-570nm blue-green LEDs. This wavelength band boosts piglet activity and feed conversion by 5–8%.


Pig fattening: Weight gain lighting optimization


During fattening (over 10 weeks), minimize activity-related energy expenditure:
Lighting plan: 8-10 hours of moderate-intensity light (50-100 lux) for feed area uniformity.
Maintain 14-16 hours of darkness (<5 lux) daily for proper melatonin secretion and immunological function.
System to control lighting: Use a progressive dimming controller (≥ 15 minutes) to avoid panic and turmoil in the audience caused by unexpected lighting changes.


Key Lighting Fixture Selection and Installation Criteria


Spectrum adaptation: The dedicated LED bulbs must switch between blue-green (for conservation) and full-spectrum (for reproduction) modes.
Protection level: IP66 (dust-proof and high-pressure water jet-resistant) and ammonia-resistant sealing materials. The metal parts are 316 stainless steel or reinforced engineered polymers.
Anti-collision design: Pigs eat and collide, so install heavy-duty metal guardrails or embed them in the ceiling.
Controlling light precisely: Set digital timers for segmented and grouped control and calibrate the light intensity on the ground (for sows) and feed trough height (for fattening piglets) with an illuminance meter.


Key Maintenance and Monitoring Points


Maintain light transmission by cleaning the lampshade's dust and oil stains monthly.
The fixtures' light attenuation is checked quarterly. They should be replaced immediately if light flux drops 15% or higher.
Record piglet estrus rate, weaning estrus interval, and daily weight increase to evaluate the lighting scheme.
The circuit has independent overload and leakage protection. In damp environments, it uses 24V safe voltage.
