In public buildings, fear can happen during earthquakes, fires, or power blackouts caused by people tripping over wires. This makes it harder to get out and can even kill people. Not being able to find the exit can be very bad for many reasons, ranging from real risks to making bad decisions out of fear.
Because of this, the law says that all public places must have emergency lights. If the main power goes out, the emergency lights will turn on by itself, no matter what caused it. This will help people inside the building find the closest emergency exit. There are two main types of emergency lighting: ones that stay on all the time and ones that don't. How are they different from each other? Why does this matter to you?
Non-Maintained Emergency Lighting
The only time non-persistent emergency lighting is supposed to be used is when the building's main power power goes out. The backup batteries and the building's lighting system are linked to these lamps. They don't light up when the main power is working regularly; they only do so when the main power goes out. There are different kinds of these lamps, from tiny pinhole lamps with low power that only give off a dim light to show where the exit is to emergency exit signs that will light up when the power goes out.
People who work in places like workshops and offices are used to this kind of lighting because they already know how everything is set up on the job.
Maintained Emergency Lighting
In an emergency, continuous emergency lighting is just as useful as non-continuous lighting, but it is also used as the main lighting in the room. Under normal conditions, it gets power from the wall outlet and charges the built-in battery at the same time. If the main power source goes out, it automatically changes to battery power. In a sense, this is a lamp that never turns off.
This kind of lighting is often found in public places like movie theaters and shopping malls. People may not know their way around these places, so they need a road with bright, constant lighting to help them find the nearest exit.
