Chickens and humans have different schedules, which occasionally clash.

info-1-1

People switch on electric lights and furnaces as the days become shorter and the temperature decreases, and they sleep roughly the same number of hours as they would in the summer. Not hens. The time of day determines their daily routine. Without artificial light, they fall asleep as soon as dusk falls and don't wake up until daylight the following day. They frequently get 15 or 16 hours of sleep every night in high latitudes.

Winter is a season for rest, not for breeding, for hens. Egg production decreases as autumn progresses because to less daylight, however cold temperatures do not decrease laying. That can cause issues for their owner.

Baking season is marked by long, dark hours and winter holidays. Popular winter dishes like cakes, cookies, and casseroles call for a lot of eggs during the season when chickens are resting.

Although output is low, a healthy flock of good layers rarely stops laying altogether, even in the dark of December. At latitudes like Chicago, New York, or Seattle, the average late December day is about nine hours, but for optimal egg production, chickens require 14 or 15 hours of light. For owners, the solution is simple.

Production will be increased by a single light bulb that mimics the length of June's days. For winter lighting, the same light fixture that is used to brood chicks is frequently a good choice. A nine to twelve watt compact fluorescent or LED bulb should be screwed in and suspended close to the coop ceiling. LEDs perform better in colder climates, yet both types consume little electricity. The lamp should be controlled by a timer set to come on in early morning darkness and switch off after dawn. Hens will continue to lay during the winter baking season if they receive nine hours of natural daylight and many predawn hours of artificial light.

The morality of deceiving chickens into producing false eggs is a topic of discussion among chicken owners. There is no simple answer, and it is a matter of personal choice for the flock owner. Some people would rather let nature do its thing and just make plans to gather fewer eggs during the dark months. Some people have little problem fooling January hens into believing it is May.
