UV LED lights are widely used in industrial curing, disinfection, beauty, testing and many other fields. Most buyers will encounter three mainstream types: UVA, UVB and UVC LED. Many people cannot distinguish their wavelength ranges, core functions and applicable scenarios, which easily leads to wrong product selection and project failure.
Each band of ultraviolet has completely different photon energy, action principles and usage limitations. Choosing the wrong UV LED will result in poor curing effect, no sterilization, or even safety hazards. This article systematically sorts out all differences between UVA, UVB and UVC LED UV lights, compares their advantages and application ranges, and gives clear purchasing guidance for wholesale merchants and engineering contractors.
Wavelength Range & Basic Characteristics of UVA, UVB, UVC LED
The classification standard of ultraviolet light is based on wavelength, and each band has fixed numerical intervals and inherent light properties.
UVA LED (Long-wave ultraviolet, 315nm–405nm)
The most mature and largest output UV LED on the market. The mainstream commercial wavelengths are 365nm and 395nm. Low photon energy, strong penetration, stable light output, and the lowest attenuation rate during long-term operation.
UVB LED (Medium-wave ultraviolet, 280nm–315nm)
Medium energy, weak penetration, most UVB will be blocked by glass and plastic. The chip technology is not as mature as UVA, and the product supply is relatively small in the market.
UVC LED (Short-wave deep ultraviolet, 200nm–280nm)
Highest photon energy, extremely weak penetration, cannot pass through ordinary glass or plastic. The core sterilization band is 260–275nm. The chip cost is high, and the lamp body has high requirements for sealing and anti-aging design.
Core Functional Differences of Three Types of UV LED
UVA LED
Its core function is to trigger photochemical reaction of UV glue, UV ink and resin, and excite fluorescent substances to realize anti-counterfeiting detection. It cannot kill bacteria and viruses efficiently. Long-term irradiation will accelerate material aging, but will not cause acute burns to skin in a short time.
UVB LED
Mainly acts on the skin surface to promote vitamin D synthesis; it can inhibit partial microbial activity, but the sterilization efficiency is far lower than UVC. Long-term exposure will cause skin redness, sunburn and pigment precipitation. It is rarely used in industrial mass production.
UVC LED
Directly destroys the DNA and RNA structure of bacteria, viruses, mold and spores to achieve rapid sterilization and deodorization. It has no curing function and cannot excite fluorescent markers. Short-time direct exposure will cause serious damage to human skin and eyes.
Detailed Application Scenario Comparison
UVA LED Main Scenarios
Industrial field: 3C electronic glue curing, printing ink drying, wood paint curing, 3D printing resin molding
Testing field: Banknote anti-counterfeiting detection, jade identification, pipeline crack inspection, pet urine detection
Civil & decorative: Nail salon nail curing lamps, KTV blacklight atmosphere lights, fluorescent painting party lights
UVB LED Main Scenarios
Medical physiotherapy equipment: Skin disease auxiliary treatment, vitamin D supplement physiotherapy lamps
Small agricultural use: Supplement UV light for special crops to promote fruit coloring
Rare experimental testing, small laboratory culture equipment
UVC LED Main Scenarios
Sanitation disinfection: Water dispenser, air purifier, refrigerator sterilization module
Food industry: Food surface disinfection, packaging surface sterilization
Public space: Elevator, warehouse, cold storage unmanned disinfection lamps
Household appliances: Disinfection boxes, toothbrush sterilizers
Safety Risks & Protection Requirements for Each UV Band
UVA LED
Low acute hazard. Long-term unprotected irradiation will cause skin aging and eye dryness. Ordinary anti-blue light glasses can play a certain protective effect, and special UV goggles are recommended for long-time operation.
UVB LED
Medium irritation risk. Direct irradiation for more than 10 minutes will cause sunburn and eye stinging. Operators must wear full-coverage UV protective glasses and avoid bare skin exposure.
UVC LED
High safety risk, strong corrosive to human tissues. Direct sight will cause temporary conjunctivitis and corneal damage; skin exposure will produce erythema and blisters. UVC disinfection lamps must be used in unmanned environments, and light shielding structures are required for equipment built-in UVC modules.
Service Life & Cost Differences of UV LED Chips
UVA LED: Mature chip technology, service life 30,000–50,000 hours, the lowest unit price, suitable for large-batch wholesale and assembly.
UVB LED: Small market demand, unstable chip yield, service life about 15,000–25,000 hours, medium cost, mostly customized small orders.
UVC LED: Complex chip production process, easy light decay, service life only 8,000–20,000 hours, the highest cost, mostly used for high-value disinfection equipment supporting.
Summary
If you need curing, anti-counterfeiting detection, nail art or decorative blacklight: Choose UVA LED (365nm for high precision, 395nm for cost performance).
If you need physiotherapy, crop light supplement and special biological experiments: Select UVB LED, confirm the specific wavelength parameters before ordering.
If you need air, water, surface sterilization and deodorization: Only UVC LED 260–275nm can meet the standard sterilization demand.
Procurement reminder: Do not mix different UV bands to replace each other. Confirm the core function of the product first to match the corresponding UV LED band, to avoid unusable finished products.
