Let's start by discussing what wash lighting isn't. Wash lighting—lights that are directed upward along walls and other architectural details—is not uplighting. Uplighting, which many people mistakenly think of as wash lighting, is something you probably already know if you work as a wedding DJ. Additionally, it is not downlighting, the opposite of uplighting. Instead, wash lighting is a smooth, diffuse kind of illumination that fills a space with light. Wash fixtures provide a broad, widely diffused light instead of concentrated, narrow beams of light.
For a light show to be successful, wash lighting is required. There are various uses for it, but one stands out above the others. Fundamentally, excellent wash lighting is crucial because it enables DJs to reduce or disable overhead lighting in the locations where we play. Harsh overhead lighting is not ideal for partying, dancing, or having a good time. When their behaviors are clearly visible to every else in the room, people are far less inclined to open up or get up from their seats. Additionally, the fluorescent lighting at many venues doesn't fully create the ambiance that we DJs are trying to. You want to do all you can to make the party ambiance welcoming for guests psychologically.
While attractive and significant, other DJ lighting styles just don't provide enough light to adequately fill many rooms. Even though most people like dancing in the dark, they don't want it to be completely dark. This can just irritate visitors on private occasions. Some occasions, like school dances, even call for a specific degree of ambient light. Without good wash lighting, DJs often have to leave at least part of the venue's lights on. As a result, one half of the room has a strange, discordant lighting pattern of color and atmosphere, while the other has "office-space" venue lighting.
DJ wash lighting: a master of all crafts
Additionally, wash lighting should be the foundation of any light show because of its enormous versatility. Moving heads, strobe lighting, effect lighting, and even lasers may not be appropriate for every occasion. For these fixtures to slow down the built-in automated shows, programming is often necessary. Even yet, it may not be suitable to have a moving head whirling about at a company conference or grand opening. The fewer occasions for which a lighting package may be sold, the lower the return on investment.
On the other hand, wash lighting may blend in just about any place. Wash lighting has a place in everything from the classiest, most understated cocktail hour to the craziest college party. Need to create a romantic atmosphere for Valentine's dinner and dance? The dark, warm red light should permeate the space. Looking to fill a room with a deep blue hue for an event with an ocean or space theme? When the intensity level increases, excellent wash lighting may quickly change into a captivating strobe or pulsating dancefloor effect.
