Hundreds of LEDs may be used to create dynamic color and motion effects with the OSIRE® E3731i intelligent RGB LED.
The clever RGBi communicates with any microcontroller using a brand-new, license-free Open System Protocol.
A broad variety of models and market categories may now access dynamic lighting thanks to the combination of modern LED technology and protocol, which lowers installation costs and complexity.

Premstaetten, Austria and Munich, Germany (July 27, 2023) - ams OSRAM (SIX: AMS), a world pioneer in optical solutions, presents a new technology that makes it more easier to install dynamic arrays of hundreds of RGB LEDs that change color and intensity for interior vehicle illumination.

A digital core in the new OSIRE® E3731i RGB LED allows for low-latency connection with any microcontroller via a common serial bus interface. Additionally, a new Open System Protocol (OSP) that runs on the OSIRE® E3731i has been created by ams OSRAM. Any microcontroller may use OSP to send commands to each LED to separately modify color and brightness. Any producer of automobiles, LEDs, lighting systems, or microcontrollers is free to utilize OSP without a license or charge.

Automobile manufacturers may create innovative dynamic lighting effects in the inside of their vehicles by using the OSIRE® E3731i LED and OSP. One microcontroller may be used to operate a daisy chain of up to 1,000 LEDs.

"Dynamic lighting promises to add value to cars by combining color and brightness changes with pulsing, breathing, or moving light effects, for decorative or functional purposes," said Hermann Senninger, Senior Product Manager of ams OSRAM. Dynamic interior lighting may be accomplished with a simpler design, fewer components, less wiring, and a reduced system cost thanks to the OSIRE® E3731i and OSP. Customers are already being drawn in by these advantages, and we anticipate seeing the product used in production cars shortly.

Every LED has intelligence built in.

The creation of the new intelligent LED makes use of ams OSRAM's broad range of optical technologies, IC design, and production capabilities. A temperature sensor, on-chip memory, three LED drivers, and a serial bus interface that supports the OSP are all included in the OSIRE® E3731i, a high-performance RGB LED co-packaged with an IC.

At the production, each intelligent RGB LED is characterized, and its on-chip memory stores information about its optical performance. Automotive manufacturers may now more easily achieve extremely high optical uniformity and consistency across arrays of hundreds of OSIRE® E3731i LEDs and undertake end-of-line calibration of interior lighting systems.

The most recent AEC-Q102 Annex 3 standard is now met by the OSIRE® E3731i.
