Dynamic ambient lighting and tuneable colour application have grown in popularity in recent years. However, the variable mixed colour output of RGB LEDs is a constant issue for design engineers. This is brought on by temperature and forward current dependencies, as well as differences in wavelength and intensity within the colour and brightness groups. Everyone is eager to find a better way to do this.
Since Electronica 2016, DOMINANT Opto Technologies has introduced a new package family called seddLED (Smart Embedded Digital Driver LED). This is the first digital LED in the world to combine RGB LED, LED Driver, and the cutting-edge ISELED® communication protocol into a single package. Using RGB LEDs that are completely calibrated to target coordinates is a novel way to ambient lighting in automobiles.
SeddLED3.0, part number A3A-FKG-1400-1, is the initial introduction. It is pre-calibrated to the D65 white point at 1,400 mcd with an accuracy of within 3 SDCM steps.
The new seddLED3.0 family member, A3A-FKG-RGB-1, which is pre-calibrated to individual red, true green, and blue colour at 400 mcd, 1600 mcd, and 250 mcd, respectively, is proudly presented by DOMINANT this year. It's interesting to note that just one wavelength-1 nm-is pre-calibrated for the real green and blue colour.
The majority of conventional RGB LEDs are binned for each chip's colour and intensity inside a package. Depending on the LED manufacturer, it often has three to six binning categories. Binning considerably reduces the range of colours that may be present, although it does not totally eliminate color-mixed irregularities.
A3A-FKG-RGB-1 has the benefit of being able to precisely adjust colour and intensity variations via temperature compensation, wavelength calibration, and LED peak current (PWM) regulation.
The colour gamut comparison between A3A-FKG-RGB-1 and conventional RGB LEDs is shown in Figure 1. Each of the many colour groups in a standard RGB LED has a wavelength range of 4 nm. Each colour grouping has a different standard RGB colour gamut, which will impact how accurately colours are combined. It is evident that the colour gamut of A3A-FKG-RGB-1 with True Green & Blue pre-calibrated is outstanding and steady.
Additionally, the seddLED3.0 product line has a temperature sensor built in to allow Red LED brightness calibration. The intensity versus temperature characteristic for each of the three chips that make up a typical RGB LED is seen in Figure 2. As LED operating temperatures rise, red LEDs' luminosity intensity falls. The reduction in light intensity is less pronounced for Blue and True Green LEDs. As shown in Figure 3, seddLED3.0's auto temperature adaptation capability allows it to sustain the Red LED's intensity.
Both A3A-FKG-1400-1 and A3A-FKG-RGB-1 greatly increase the usefulness, lower costs, and simplify control of RGB lighting in cars. The optical characteristics of both LEDs are shown in Table 1.
Applications requiring high brightness for specific RGB colours are well suited for the A3A-FKG-RGB-1. Better dimming resolution is achieved by calibrating each R.G.B. LED to its maximum brightness.
A3A-FKG-1400-1, on the other hand, is a great option for applications that need a high level of precision in the White colour coordinate, such D65 white.
Since October 2019, the A3A-FKG-RGB-1 prototype sample has been accessible.
DOMINANT will keep pushing the development of digital RGB LEDs in this area, and the technical roadmap for seddLED is anticipated to concentrate on digitalisation, integration, and miniaturisation over the next five years.
