Fluorescent tubes were the main source of light in homes, workplaces, and public areas for a long time. But as lighting technology has developed, conventional fluorescent bulbs have increasingly been supplanted with LED tube lights. In addition to being longer-lasting and more energy-efficient, they significantly save maintenance costs and offer more pleasant illumination.

It's crucial to take your current circumstances into account while selecting LED tube lights. You have more options if it's a new installation. You may select between separate tubes with brackets or integrated fixtures, after which you can choose the color temperature and length. Particular consideration should be given to socket type, tube length, and wattage equivalency when replacing outdated fluorescent tubes.

Common Types of LED Tube Lights

There are several varieties of LED tube lights, mostly varying in diameter, socket type, and application scenarios. T5, T8, T10, T12, U-shaped, and PL-C tubes are the most often used types:

T5 (G5 socket, around 16 mm in diameter)

Frequently utilized in integrated fixtures, it is small and has high heat dissipation. Because of its small size, it is perfect for tight areas like workstations, show cases, under-cabinet lighting, or office ceilings that need uniform lighting.

T8 (Approx. 26 mm diameter, G13 socket)

The most common and extensively utilized kind is T8 (about 26 mm diameter, G13 socket). T8 LED tubes are easy to replace in homes, businesses, offices, schools, and parking lots since they are the same size as conventional fluorescent tubes. With a minimal refit cost, they are sometimes viewed as a straight replacement for fluorescent bulbs.

T10/T12 (diameter: around 30–38 mm)

These tubes, which are thicker than T8, are frequently seen in older lighting systems like those in public buildings or industries. LED replacements are becoming less prevalent as they are phased out. Verifying fixture space and socket compatibility is essential if necessary.

U-shaped and PL-C tubes

Often utilized in task lighting, commercial displays, and recessed ceiling lights, this product is made for small places. Consider socket types (such as 2-pin or 4-pin) and whether the fixture permits direct retrofit when selecting LED replacements.

T5 tubes are better suited for new designs or integrated fixtures, T8 tubes are generally the most adaptable and commonly used, while T10/T12, U-shaped, and PL-C tubes are typically for older or unique applications that need rigorous compatibility tests.

Choosing LED Tubes for New Installations

Because there are no restrictions from existing fixtures, the option is more versatile for new spaces or renovations. In this instance, you may select the tube light's shape first, followed by its length, color temperature, and brightness.

1. Tube Formats:

Different tubes (such as T8/T5 tubes with brackets)

Advantages: Tubes and fittings are separate, making replacement easier-only the tube needs to be changed later.

Applications include corridors, schools, office ceilings, and any other area that needs consistent linear illumination.

Tube lights that are incorporated (T5/T8 integrated fixtures)

Benefits: The combination of tube and fixture, typically with an integrated power cable and switch, makes installation more simpler-just mount and plug in.

Applications include basements, storage spaces, under-cabinet lighting, garages, kitchens, and other utility areas where ease of use and speedy installation are crucial.

2. Important Points

Length:

Common possibilities are 2 ft (about 60 cm), 3 ft (about 90 cm), and 4 ft (about 120 cm). Longer and higher-wattage tubes are typically needed in larger settings to provide uniform illumination.

Temperature of Color:

3000K Warm White → This soft, yellowish light is perfect for creating a warm ambiance in living areas and bedrooms.

4000K Neutral White → A well-balanced, neutral color that works well in offices, study spaces, and kitchens.

5000K Daylight White → Clear, bright light that is nearly identical to natural daylight; frequently used in workplaces that need to be very visible, such as stores and offices.

Brightness & Wattage: More brightness is achieved with more wattage. While big spaces (such classrooms or warehouses) may demand larger wattage, smaller rooms and homes often require fewer wattage. Always consider the surrounding conditions while making a choice because too much light might result in glare.
