Size and appearance differ greatly between T8 and T5
The lamp tube diameter is the biggest difference:
Light Tube: T8 About 26 millimeters wide. It was the standard fluorescent lighting specification in workplaces, schools, warehouses, and other areas due to its thick appearance.
T5 Lamp Tube: 16mm diameter. It is slimmer and smaller than older fluorescent lighting technology. It is increasingly frequent in space-saving and modern lighting schemes.
Which is brighter? Which uses less power?
Energy efficiency matters:
T5 lights are usually more efficient and produce more light. Due to its shorter tube diameter and optimized technology (such as high-frequency electronic ballasts), T5 may typically generate more lumens than T8 at the same power or with reduced power usage. T5 has cheaper long-term operational costs.
Power range: T8 covers 18W, 36W, 58W. T5 focuses on efficient light emission with a power range of 14W, 21W, 28W, 35W.
May I directly replace it? What should I watch during installation?
Compatibility is the main issue:
Non-universal lamp holders: various widths necessitate various bulb holders (G13 for G5) for T8 and T5 lamps. T8 can't go in T5 lights, and vice versa.
Ballast needs vary: Modern T8 tube light employ electronic ballasts instead of inductive ones, which can flicker and make noise. T5 lights need matching electronic ballasts to maximize efficiency. Directly replacing T8 bulbs is usually impossible.
Ideas for buying: Select From Space Needs
Choose T8: Suitable for warehouses and ancient office buildings with T8 bulbs and a modest budget without major upgrades. Choose a high-efficiency electronic ballast when replacing.
Choose T5: New installations or energy-saving modifications are advised. Ideal for modern offices, retail malls, show areas, and houses that need great brightness, energy efficiency, and compact lamp designs. Slenderness matches modern aesthetics better.
Summary
T5, with its slim shape and improved energy efficiency, is the latest fluorescent lighting technology and suited for new installations and restorations. Due to its wide installation base, T8 still sells. Understanding the main variations in size, energy efficiency, and installation requirements allows one to choose depending on actual needs and situations.
