With the future of scalable food production becoming a more pressing matter, the horticulture lighting sector is expanding quickly. High-quality sunshine substitutes are sought after by growers as essential elements in contemporary indoor agricultural settings. LED producers are engaged in intense competition to provide horticultural lighting solutions that may successfully enhance plant growing in order to meet these demands. Samsung has just introduced plant-centric spectrum LEDs designed especially for indoor farming, in line with this trend.

Prior until recently, horticulture lighting was created with human illumination in mind and was not thoroughly investigated for its ability to promote the holistic growth of plants. This kind of analysis takes into account elements such as a crop's nutritional value and freshness in addition to physical plant development. Previously, the only metric used to assess the effectiveness of horticulture lighting was photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), which counts the number of photosynthetically active photons a lighting system emits per second. However, recent studies have revealed that a light spectrum significantly affects plant growth.

Based on this study, Samsung has created a genuine horticulture light source with a 437 nm spectral peak that uses its top-notch spectrum engineering expertise to provide industry-leading PPE to boost crop quality and plant development.

Compared to current horticulture lighting options, Samsung's ground-breaking plant-centric spectrum LED significantly increases photosynthesis, leading to better, more comprehensive plant development. Its spectral peak, which is shorter than that of traditional horticultural white LEDs at 437 nm, also promotes secondary metabolites like flavonols and phenolics, which enhance the nutritional value of plants. Additionally, the development of bacteria and fungus is efficiently inhibited by this newly tailored spectrum, resulting in longer-lasting storability. Last but not least, its industry-leading PPE uses very little energy, which helps indoor farms save money over time and run more efficiently.

Samsung and Gyeongsang National University collaborated to undertake a six-week experiment that looked at the effects of different horticultural light sources on holistic plant development in order to objectively evaluate Samsung's new plant-centric spectrum. Samsung's LM301H EVO series, which makes use of this plant-centric light spectrum, was one of four LED lighting kinds that were compared in the trial.

"Not only is LED lighting more efficient and long-lasting, but its greatest advantage is that we can specifically engineer its spectrum to optimise plant growth," said Dr. Ki-Ho Son of Gyeongsang National University, who oversaw the experiment. According to our testing, compared to standard white LEDs or blue-and-red LED combinations, the LM301H EVO series, which employs the shorter wavelength plant-centric spectrum, stimulates greater physical and qualitative development. Higher nutrient levels and larger, thicker leaves were characteristics of plants cultivated in the plant-centric light spectrum.

"Our recently launched lineup is specifically designed to meet the needs of horticulturists who want a more robust, valuable crop while consuming less energy," said Mike Mang, Vice President of the LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. He went on to say, "Growers will be able to experience next-level agriculture by cultivating higher quantity and better quality production while saving costs thanks to horticulture lighting based on our new plant-centric spectrum." To provide cutting-edge LED lighting solutions for an even greater range of locations, from indoor living areas to the broader horticulture sector, we want to keep refining Samsung's spectrum engineering expertise.

Samsung Electronics aims to meet the various demands of the agricultural and horticultural sectors as well as contribute to the resolution of future issues pertaining to sustainable food production.

Production of the new LM301H EVO has begun.
