Smart Recessed Lighting: How To Choose The Right Smart Lights For Your Project

These are the lights you need if you want to replace your old recessed can lights with smart ones or if you want to add some new smart recessed lighting. In this essay, I'll go through which brands and models are suitable for various scenarios involving home automation.

Retrofit can lights or wafer lights?

Priorities come first. There are typically two types of smart recessed lighting. (see below). Your preferred form will depend on the lighting conditions at hand.

Retrofit can lights: These intelligent lights are made to fit within recessed cans that already exist. They replace your old bulb and trim. They are available in two standard sizes: 4′′ (fits 4′′ cans) and 5′′/6′′ (adapts to accommodate either 5′′ or 6′′ cans). They usually stand between 3 and 4 inches tall. They typically come with an adaptor plug that fits into the regular light socket inside the can to obtain power. Then, using spring-loaded clips, the light's body snaps into position inside the can.

Known also as "canless" or "ultra-thin" LED lights, wafer lights These pancake-shaped LED smart lights are made of plastic. They typically have a diameter of 4 or 6 inches and a thickness of 1 to 2 inches. They include a metal junction box for power that is wired into the electrical system of your house. After that, a low voltage cable that emerges from the junction box is connected to the LEDs. Simply cut a hole in the drywall of the proper size to attach the light, and spring clips secure it in place. Since the lights are so lightweight, no mounting hardware is required.

When to use retrofit smart lights in recessed cans

The simplest option to convert your existing recessed lights to smart recessed lights is to purchase retrofit smart LEDs if you already have recessed cans installed.

using smart wafer lights when

The ultra-thin wafer design smart lights are my favourite choice, though, if you don't already have cans installed. There is no need to buy and install any recessed can fixtures when using the wafer lights. Additionally, they can squeeze into much smaller areas.

Are intelligent recessed lights still out of reach? Instead, use a smart switch.

You will typically have numerous lights in a single room with recessed lighting. There could be four, six, twelve, or even more lights in one space. The cost can quickly mount if you decide to replace all of those lights with smart lights. Therefore, if you're searching for a more cost-effective solution, you might think about employing conventional recessed lights (such as these)** and controlling them with a single smart switch or smart dimmer. I wholeheartedly advise the dimmers if you choose to take this path. Even with LEDs, they have excellent dimming performance and are quite dependable.

You may still operate your lights using voice commands and routines for home automation when you choose the smart switch/dimmer option. (as well as using the wall switch). The disadvantages are that you will no longer be able to operate each light independently and that smart lights won't work in full colour. Compare smart switches vs. smart lights by reading more.

Final Reflections

I believe that an excellent control system must come first for a decent smart light.

After all, the entire point of the smart home and smart lighting is to make our homes more aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and functional.
