The perfect lighting of facades: what you should know!

The perfect lighting of facades

Find the ideal light dispersal for everything from accentuating to floodlighting.

For outdoor applications, BENWEI Lighting provides luminaires with up to 10 distinct light distributions. The selection spans a large distribution to very restricted distributions. This allows for the implementation of a wide range of lighting concepts, from the precise accentuation of minute details on a facade with narrow light distributions like narrow spot (approx. 8°), spot (approx. 10° to 20°), and flood (approx. 30°), to the uniform floodlighting of substantial buildings with light distributions like wide flood (approx. 50°), extra wide flood (approx. 90°), and wallwash (uniform wallwashing). Additionally, oval light distributions like oval flood (about 20° x 60°) are available and allow for the highlighting of logos and linear facade components. High-quality optics from BENWEI Lighting let you use precision LED technology to obtain maximum illuminances on the target surface.

Uniformly illuminating an entire facade

Wallwashing accentuates the scale of the architecture as a whole while uniformly illuminating facades. The fact that a vertical surface produces a strong sense of brightness even with low illumination is a significant benefit in the design of urban places. BENWEI offers customised luminaires with wallwash light distribution in several of its product lines for effective wallwashing with wide luminaire spacing.

Grazing light modelling of the facade structure

Grazing light may also be used to wallwash. Strong shadows are used in this technique to underline and emphasise the intricacies of facades. Grazing light works especially well on old facades with intricate textures and reliefs. The best lighting options for this are ground-recessed and facade luminaires.

Utilisation of bright hues and contrasts correctly

The subtlety of the facade is enhanced by the use of several light colours. colder light hues like 4000K are more suited for colder surfaces like exposed concrete, while warmer light colours like 3000K are better for warm-toned materials like wood. For scenographic lighting designs on facades, RGBW luminaires are perfect. Different degrees of illumination also help to distinguish the facade from one another. We advise a brightness ratio of 1:5 to 1:10 to the general lighting to make accents apparent.

Pay attention to how light should be handled properly.

To balance the demands of people, animals, and plants at night, sustainable lighting solutions for environmentally exceptional applications are essential, especially in outdoor applications. Due to their precise optics and superior glare control, BENWEI lighting equipment significantly contribute to this. Without wasting any light, they focus the light exactly where you need it. We advise you to appropriately orient the luminaires so that no light shines into the night sky in order to entirely prevent light pollution. The proper brightness also contributes to environmental protection. Our luminaires for outdoor applications are dimmable because of this.

Where do you want to illuminate—from the ground, a structure, or a mast?

One of the elements affecting the lighting impact is the position of the luminaire installation. Different varieties of luminaire are available from BENWEI that illuminate facades from the side, top, close, or distant. Ground-recessed luminaires are a very attractive way to illuminate facades from the ground since the luminaires themselves are practically invisible and only the lighting's impact is seen. Six alternative light distributions are offered for ground-recessed luminaires. On the other hand, facade luminaires serve as a subtle design feature on the building and provide a mystical kind of grazing light. With up to seven different light distribution options, projectors, floodlights, and wallwashers may be mounted practically anywhere, including on the ground, the facade, bollards, and tall masts. Numerous mounting choices are made possible by coordinating accessories.
