Light is a certain wave length of electromagnetic energy. The color of light is dependent on its wave length. Long wave lengths symbolize warm yellow and red colors, whereas short wave lengths reflect vivid blue and green hues. A low color temperature (2000-3000oK) symbolizes red hues, whereas a high color temperature (6000-7000oK) represents blue colors. Colors are frequently described as temperatures. Daylight has a color temperature of around 6500oK, and white light is a blend of all hues.
Birds can perceive light via their eyes in a way that is somewhat like to how humans view it. Particularly short wavelengths (blue, green, and brilliant white) are seen as being extremely bright and intense. These hues can stimulate behavior and boost activity levels, such as eating. For this reason, broilers occasionally come in the hues green and blue. They can also encourage undesirable behaviors like cannibalism and pecking at the same time.
Light is used by birds for reproduction as well. The brain is home to the light-sensitive cells that promote hormonal development for reproduction (under the skull). This is particularly accurate for long wavelengths that can enter the skull (comparable with sounds, where the long wavelengths from drums can penetrate through a wall or a car). Red light is consequently important to birds' ability to reproduce.
Since only the red spectrum of light is utilized to stimulate reproduction, light sources must have their wavelengths and color spectrums analyzed to see how well they stimulate reproduction.
Because only the red portion of the light spectrum promotes sexual desire, bright, blue lights of great intensity can occasionally be less exciting for reproduction than warm red/yellow lights of moderate intensity.
However, the blue/green portion of the light will enhance the activity of the birds, resulting in uneasiness and pecking, hence larger intensities are required when cool blue/white lights are used for breeding.
Because of this, broilers frequently benefit from blue/green cold lights, which have a higher light temperature than red/yellow warm lights (low light temperature), which are preferred by breeders.
