Emergency lighting is necessary for business settings such as offices, classrooms, halls, warehouses, restaurants, etc. When there is a power outage, they offer illumination.

Typically, a lighting circuit uses line voltage to power these lights. Emergency lights will turn on in the event of a power outage. These lights are required to be on for a minimum of 90 minutes by code.

Emergency lighting fixtures use line voltage to recharge their rechargeable battery. The test button on these fixtures allows battery power to light the fixture if the battery is functioning properly by cutting the line voltage to the fixture and indicating that power is on to the fixture. Typically, the test button and indicator light are identical.

Inside a fluorescent tube fixture, an emergency ballast—a rechargeable battery pack that resembles a fluorescent ballast—provides emergency lighting. They function similarly to emergency lights. Depending on how the ballasts are wired, the emergency ballast will power one or two fluorescent tubes during a power outage.

One or more regular ballasts and one emergency ballast are present in a fluorescent tube fixture with an emergency ballast. Rapid Start (connected in series) or Instant Start are two options for the standard ballast (wired in parallel).

A fluorescent tube fixture with an emergency ballast has two sources of electricity. Usually, the same circuit is used to supply power to all of these sources.

1. Changed the power switch to turn on and off the lights.
2. Constant electricity to maintain the emergency ballast charged.

Emergency ballasts have a test button and an indicator light similar to emergency lights. Sometimes they overlap, other times they don't.
