Why are heatsinks necessary for LED lights?
Semiconductor devices called light-emitting diodes (LEDs) transform electrical energy into light energy while also converting a portion of the electrical energy into heat energy. The junction temperature is the point at which heat energy is transmitted from the LED light beads to the PCB board; it is closely correlated with the rate of light decay or LED life. A poorly dissipated heat source will have a high junction temperature and a limited lifespan. Thus, the only way to successfully lower the temperature of the LED lights is to export heat energy as quickly as feasible. By preventing the power supply from operating in an environment with constant high temperatures, it is possible to prevent the premature aging of the LED light source caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.


How may LED light fixtures lower their temperature?
Conduction, convection, and radiation are the three ways that heat may travel under typical circumstances. Conduction is the process by which heat is transported from one item with a higher temperature to another that is in direct contact with it. While radiation releases heat directly into the surrounding space without the need for a medium, convection transfers heat via fluid movement.

In real-world applications, using a heatsink is the primary method of heat dissipation for high-power LED lighting fixtures. By making exact contact with the chip surface, the heat sink transfers the heat from the chip to the heat sink. Typically, the heatsink is a multi-finned thermal conductor. Its completely expanded surface radiates much more heat, and more heat energy can be removed by the flowing air.
